What is the difference between clear braces and clear aligners?

Both braces and clear aligners are effective orthodontic treatments that straighten teeth and correct bite issues, but they work in quite different ways.

Orthodontic Treatment in Singleton Explained

Traditional braces use metal or ceramic brackets bonded to your teeth, connected by wires that are gradually adjusted to shift your teeth into position. They're fixed in place throughout treatment and are highly effective for complex orthodontic cases. Braces require regular appointments for adjustments and careful attention to oral hygiene around the brackets.

Clear aligners are removable, transparent plastic trays custom-made to fit snugly over your teeth. You'll receive a series of aligners that you change every one to two weeks, with each set moving your teeth incrementally. They're virtually invisible and can be removed for eating, brushing and special occasions.

Key differences include:

  • Appearance  Aligners are nearly invisible, whilst braces are more noticeable (though ceramic options are less obvious than metal)
  • Removability — Aligners come out for meals and cleaning; braces stay put
  • Dietary restrictions — Braces require avoiding sticky or hard foods; aligners have no food restrictions.
  • Comfort — Aligners typically cause less irritation to cheeks and gums.
  • Treatment scope — Braces can handle more complex cases; aligners work best for mild to moderate misalignment.
  • Maintenance — Aligners require discipline to wear 20-22 hours daily; braces need careful cleaning around brackets.
